“Point of Origin” fits into this gimmicky category. Become a Member and support film journalism. With DeWanda Wise, Lucinda Dryzek, Jefferson White, Jessica Williams. But the big mystery remains, why is Eve here and how can she get back home? She looks like she stepped out of a ’50s vacuum magazine ad. “Point of Origin” — Pictured (l-r): Zabryna Guevara as Anna Fuentes; Ginnifer Goodwin as Eve Martin of the CBS All Access series THE TWILIGHT ZONE. While trying to come up with an angle for this week’s episode of The Twilight Zone, titled “Point of Origin,” all I could do was sigh. After Eve spends an unknown time in isolation, slowly going mad from the loneliness, lack of light, and unknown future, a few good Samaritans put a plan in motion to help her escape. I found this episode frustrating in that all the elements of an exceptional story and performance (Ginnifer Goodwin is excellent here) were there and yet Point of Origin never reaches its full potential. She’ll play nice as long as she’s not challenged about sociopolitical issues, and forced to consider the plight of others. The plan is to ship Eve back to her home, a world we know little about apart from a nightmare sequence spliced into the episode. Like prior episodes, its lengthy runtime is detrimental. She’s strapped down and forced to answer questions from Allendale. Ultimately, “Point of Origin” brings the narrative full circle when Eve escapes and returns home. Eve apologizes, telling Anna she had no idea they’d bring her “to a place like this.” She ignorantly explains, “I assumed they would deport you back to Mexico.” Anna clarifies that she’s from Zacapa and calls Eve out for knowing so little about someone she claimed was a part of her family. Once integrated into “the system,” Eve stumbles upon Anna and is surprised she wasn’t “sent back to Mexico.” Despite Anna’s anger at Eve’s ignorance of her life—including her ethnicity and her children’s names—Anna vows to help Eve escape. My Campy Slumber Party: Xanadu, Muses, and Disco, Oh My! Eve’s dimension is cast is black and white, a seemingly dismal landscape buried in a flurry of ashes. There, she’s reunited with Anna. In conclusion, “Point of Origin” deserves points for trying but, like some episodes of this reboot, collapses under its own weight. Do immigrants really understand how America truly works? Maybe that’s all an episode of The Twilight Zone needs to go for, but it’s also part of why I don’t often gravitate toward these anthology shows. A housewife discovers where she's really from when she's taken away from her family. Will Johnson I fully expect an episode like this to appear in a typical 20-plus-episode season of network television.
