When Golovkin first popped on the U.S. radar, in 2012, against Grzegorz Proksa, in a small casino in upstate New York, he was singularly focused. The first fight of the agreement will take place on either June 8 or 15 against an opponent and at a site to be determined, but it sets up the probability of a third fight with rival Canelo Alvarez in September if Alvarez wins his middleweight unification fight with Daniel Jacobs on May 4. Golovkin is still a high-level 160-pounder, but a decision win over Daniel Jacobs and back-to-back decisions against Alvarez have dissolved the aura of invincibility that once enveloped him.
He’s probably 10-12 pounds over his weight now, so when he comes into camp he’s not abusing his body, and we can focus on working on other things.”. He still wants big fights, but he devotes more thought to his life after boxing.
The former unified middleweight world champion signed a three-year, six-fight contract … He will return to the ring in June against a ranked but likely safe opponent, so not to derail a possible third fight with Alvarez in the fall.
You wondered why with so many middleweight fighters connected to DAZN—the subscriber-based streaming service that ultimately signed Golovkin to a six-fight deal last week—he wasn’t jumping at the chance to get in that mix. "We're confident he will bring his passionate fans to the platform as we produce tentpole events with his team over the next several years.". “I want to share that with fighters who will be working with me on GGG promotions and I think with DAZN we have the right partner to put on the best fights.”. Are the Charlos elite champions? Both offered him lucrative deals and at one point Golovkin accepted an offer from ESPN in January, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the situation, but he eventually changed his mind and did not sign.
You wondered if Golovkin, a month shy of his 37th birthday, had the same passion for the sport he did seven years ago, when he stormed onto the U.S. boxing scene and began clawing his way to the top of it. Keith Idec of BoxingScene.com reported that the current goal for DAZN is to put on a third fight between Golovkin and Alvarez: Golovkin's opponent for his first fight on DAZN is TBD.
Indeed, the hunter is now the hunted. He was also wooed by ESPN, Top Rank and Premier Boxing Champions. And yet—you wondered.

It’s unfair to expect Golovkin to be in his late 30’s what he was in his late 20’s—can anyone, in any walk of life say that?—but over the next few years he will face some stiff tests.
Golovkin and Alvarez met in both September 2017 and September 2018. LOS ANGELES — There was never any real reason to believe Gennady Golovkin was finished with boxing, not after the narrowest of losses to Saul Alvarez last September, not with promoters and networks chasing him with eight-figure per fight offers, not with the middleweight division heating up with skilled and marketable contenders. Those cards will not include fights featuring Golovkin. It is unclear how closely GGG's contract resembles the one Alvarez signed with DAZN last year. He said he is eager for another crack at Alvarez (“Of course it is important to me”) while declaring that being the undisputed middleweight champion is no longer a priority.
As Golovkin’s popularity has grown, the risk has become worth the reward.
The great thing about him and always has been is he’s very professional. Golovkin, 37, is under contract to fight six times on DAZN through 2021, paying him a reported $100 million. “Youthful and exuberant back then,” Golovkin’s trainer, Abel Sanchez, said when asked to describe the difference between Golovkin then and now.
There is also the possibility of a rematch with Jacobs, whom Golovkin edged in March 2017 and who is also signed to DAZN, "Gennady Golovkin is a generational talent with international appeal," DAZN Group executive chairman John Skipper said in announcing the deal he spent months negotiating. Now, he has become the hunted.
If nothing else, Golovkin seems ready for it.
Today, there is more depth to him. Real or not: The latest on crossover fights featuring McGregor, Mayweather, Pacquiao and Khabib.
But after Alvarez there will be Jacobs, then Andrade, then Alvarez again.
The value of GGG's nine-figure deal was not disclosed.
GGG is perhaps the biggest star in boxing aside from Canelo, which makes signing him a major coup for DAZN. “Right now I have the best partner that will let me know promote fighters on GGG Promotions and me as a fighter. That deal set a new record, paying Canelo at least $365 million over the course of 11 fights and five years.

After Alvarez edged Golovkin to win the unified middleweight championship in their rematch in September, both fighters became broadcast free agents and HBO, where they had both boxed exclusively for years, exited the boxing business and made no effort to retain either of them. Let's just say it won't be someone anywhere near as good as Demetrius Andrade.
The 36-year-old Golovkin is 38-1-1 as a professional, and he also won a silver medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics for Kazakhstan.
